old chill

Driving down Mass Ave from Harvard toward Central Square tonight (about 6pm, temp hovering somewhere between 25 and 30 degrees), I passed a girl probably in her 20s on a bicycle heading in my same direction. If she was going for attention-getting, she managed it: shorts (way above the knees), flip flops, a chunky sweater, hair pulled back in a pony-tail, arms crossed and hands tucked into her sweater sleeves as she steered with her legs.

Yeah, I looked back to make sure.

As I drove the remaining 2 blocks to my street, I surveyed myself: officially in my 40s, scarf still wrapped tightly, heavy mittens on, winter coat, and traditional office gear underneath. All my car windows were up, and the heat had been on for the entire ride home (which was now at about the 35-minute mark). And my hands were still cold.

What a drag it is getting old.
